Radon Gas – What are the dangers and how do we get rid of it

By October 21, 2019No Comments

Radon Is a Cancer‑Causing, Radioactive Gas

Radon is a decaying bi-product of Uranium. Uranium has a half-life of almost 4.5billion years, so it’s going to be around for a while. Radon is completely invisible to the human senses. You can’t taste or smell Radon. Radon is a Radioactive Noble Gas. As Radon decays it emits Alpha Rays that damage the respiratory system in people and pets. Radon is the number 1 cause of Lung Cancer in non-smokers, and the 2nd leading cause of Lung Cancer next to cigarettes.

Radon can be found in any home and comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in rocks that contains Uranium then gets into the air you breathe. It comes into your home through natural updraft with ground air transfer which often times contains Radon Gas. Radon has a half life of 3.8 days and will constantly be decaying and emitted. Doesn’t matter how drafty or well sealed your home is; it can have radon if your home touches ground.

From the experts at Genesis Radon, owner Adam Sklare says “that until you know the level of Radon in your home, you won’t know if you need a Mitigation System”.

So, what if your home has high levels of Radon, and you’ve lived with it for a long time, why don’t you have lung cancer? Again, Adam says “Health concerns from Radon take many years to manifest. It has been said that a level of 10pCi/L, if you spend 8 hours in the environment, is equivalent to smoking a pack of cigarettes a day”.

Radon can weaken your immune system, especially children and older adults with weakened immune systems, causing health problems. So how do you get your home tested and what do you do if your home tests as high levels?

Start by calling a local Tester/Inspector or better yet buy your own Radon Gas Detector online!Once a problem is discovered hire an established and licensed Radon Mitigation company. Using the most up-to-date methods, providing fast and accurate results. If your home tests high that company can then design and install a system to immediately begin removing the hazardous gas from your home.

Genesis Radon, a leading Radon Mitigation company, has over a decade of professional experience. Adam is a licensed Radon Mitigation Specialists and can custom design a system for your unique home using his eye for detail to be sure your system is installed as inconspicuously as possible.
